Let’s say Etsy is launching a program that delivers packages by hot air balloon drones within two hours of purchase. It’s called Etsy Airdrop. As part of this launch, we need copy ideas for a few things.

Etsy Airdrop! Oh boy! This is a real thing, right? Please say it's a real thing.
  • One promotional banner for buyers and another for sellers.

These banners need to do two things: 1. get a person's attention, and 2. convince them to click for more information. Though the balloon-drone imagery should go a long way to taking care of that first point, the copy is going to have to take care of the bulk of the second. The copy below, I think, does a good job of both attracting attention and enticing a viewer to find out more. In keeping with Etsy's copy guidelines, the banner directed at buyers speaks to self-expression (unique) and inspiration (amazing), while the seller banner seeks to empower by offering the opportunity to be part of something new and exciting.

  • New push notifications for buyers and sellers.

Notifications should be short, sweet, and for a reason. And, when possible, they should also feel like they're in the voice of the app giving you the information. So here, I focused on getting the important information across early, and—if space permitted—adding a nice sentiment (in cases where space won't permit, such as in translations or on smaller screens, the flavor-text ("Keep an eye on the skies!" "Enjoy!" "Is everything ready?" "Thanks for using Etsy Airdrop!" etc.) could be dropped). Additionally, the standard "slide to view" becomes "slide to track", so the buyer or seller has one-swipe access to the exact location of their precious cargo.

Buyer notifications:

1) The item has been picked up

1) The item has been picked up

 2) The item has been delivered

 2) The item has been delivered

Seller notifications:

1) Drone pickup is imminent

2) Delivery complete

Keeping in mind our voice guidelines, suggest new alternative headlines for each section of Etsy.com/shipping. Starting with “Etsy Shipping” and ending with “Stellar Support”. Feel free to suggest more than one option for each, though that’s not necessary.

For this assignment, I determined that instead of straightforward descriptive terms, we should try to have these headlines speak more directly to the values and concerns of the sellers. So,  Etsy Shipping became Shipping made simple, Shipping Labels became Say goodbye to stamps, Shipping Profiles became Streamline your shipping costsTracking Updates became Keep track of your packages, and Stellar Support became Help when you need it. Of course, clarity is still the primary goal here, but these headers are slightly more fun than the descriptive ones, while hopefully getting attention (as they're speaking TO the seller), and inspiring action (since they're now more action-oriented).

That's it! Thanks for reading, and thanks for giving me the opportunity to do this. It's been a pleasure.
